Going Green with Eco-Roofing
Every year, over 10 million tons of asphalt waste is dumped in our landfills from deteriorating shingle roofs, at a cost of over $400 million in disposal fees alone. Billions of dollars are wasted on energy over-consumption due to the inefficiency of these “disposable” roofs. And billions of tons of oil byproduct is released into the air and soil in the production and disposal of asphalt roofs. We don’t want to pollute, waste precious energy, or waste our hard earned money…but do we have a choice?
Yes! There ARE many “green” options for roofing your home. Architects, builders, and homeowners can select from a variety of roof systems to find the one that best meets their “green” priorities:
Is this roof “green” at it’s source? Many roof systems are made from renewable resources and recycled content, or are manufactured using environmentally friendly methods.
Will this roof be “green” over its life span? While initial costs may be higher, some roof systems last 50 to 100 years. In addition, many roofing materials add significant energy efficiency and therefore reduce the energy costs of a home.
And finally, while this roof may pay for itself over time, budget limitations force us to ask:
Which “green” roof do I have the “green” to buy?!
